Before you head out the door make sure you have plenty of time and are in the
right frame of mind to go on a car buying trip. Being friendly and relaxed will take you much farther with the salesperson than being abrasive and difficullt. You can walk in to the car dealership confident and relaxed knowing that you have all the information you need to get a great deal on a car. You are the customer, you are in control. You are spending YOUR money, lets make sure you get the car you want at a good price before buying. Your quotes from Yahoo! Autos will allow you to sit back and enjoy the process because you know what is going on behind the scenes. OK, grab the buying folder with all your amunition and lets head to the car dealer.

As soon as you walk in to the car dealer of your choice with the Buying Folder in your hand you will be sending a message through the ranks. Oh, No, an educated car buyer. The salesperson will say to himself "They are ready to buy a car, but I am not going to make any money".

If you have chosen a good, respected and professional car dealer you will be greeted promptly and professionally by the salesperson. You will discuss your vehicle choice and pick one out a car to test drive. Go ahead for "
The Test Drive" and make sure this is the car you really want to buy.

After returning to the car dealer from your test drive your sales person may take you on a quick walking tour through the dealership pointing out Service and Parts Departments. You may be buying a car here so go ahead and get familiar with the dealer. You will then end up in a sales office or sales desk. Have a seat and get comfortable. Your sales person will then gather some information from you such as name address and phone number. They will then ask about a Trade-In if they haven't already. If you have a Trade-In they will gather that information also, like the year, make, model, color, and question you about condition. They will then ask you for your Trade-In keys.

The Trade-In

(If you have gotten this far and feel uncomfortable about giving up your trade keys because of rude or unprofessional comments, questions or behavior just thank them for the test drive and leave. If you feel uncomfortable just because you are unfamiliar with the experience, BUCK-UP, you have the power, the research, and the money. You are in control.)

Ok, I will assume you have given your sales person the keys. They will usually go look at your vehicle, maybe test drive it, and record the actual mileage and any unusual conditions such as damge, condition of tires, and any other information they can use during negotiation etc.... They will the go to the Used Car Manager or Sales Manager with your keys so they can appraise the Trade-In. They will then convey the info to the Sales Manager about you trade and the Sales or Used Car Manager will look up your Trade value in Black Book or someting similar refernece.
They will give your sales person a dollar amount of your trade which is usually 20 to 40% of the true value.

Now your sales person will return to you with a worksheet.....The Fun Begins!
